Why Choose Essential Oil Candles

For those of you who don't know, Cameron and I recently Launched O'Lumiere, an all natural candle company free from the toxins that are in your regular candles.

However, a lot of people seem to be confused about the difference between fragrance oils or essential oils. Some people think "oh if it's fragrance free then it must have no scent/smell" but that is NOT true. Scented candles derive their scent from fragrance oils or essential oils.

Essential oils are concentrated liquids derived from organic plant matter, and as such they are contain the strongest scents of that particular plant. For this reason the oils are referred to as "essential" in that the oils reflect the essence of a particular plant, root, or flower. (source)

Fragrance oils are highly concentrated synthetic or natural aroma compounds that have been mixed with a near scentless carrier oil.

Investigations into the making of scented candles show that most brands use paraffin, lead, benzene, and toluene. The latter two are known carcinogens, so upon the burning of your candle, hazardous toxins are being released into the air that you are breathing.

More Essential Oil is Required per Candle to Match The Scent Intensity of a Fragrance Oil Candle

Many fragrance oils come with phthalates. Listen to this clip of Meghan John from the Green Kiss talking about phalates:

Phthalates are a chemical compound used to dissolve raw materials so they can be made into a fragrance oil. Phthalates have been associated with a number of health issues in humans.

Parabens are another common additive that you may not want to be inhaling. Parabens are an endocrine disrupter and may cause cancer.
